From Beirut to SASS: My Life-Changing Erasmus Mobility
Discover how an Erasmus mobility at SASS gave a student from Lebanon new academic insights and lifelong memories.
My Erasmus+ Mobility Experience at the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS)
Participating in the Erasmus+ exchange program at the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS) in Slovenia has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my academic journey. Coming from Lebanon as a student at the Lebanese American University (LAU), I was excited to study in a new country, experience a different education system, and meet people from different cultures. Looking back, I can honestly say that this Erasmus mobility exceeded all my expectations and helped me grow in many ways.
Academically, studying at SASS was a great opportunity to learn in a supportive environment. The professors were kind, supportive, and always encouraged students to participate in class and share their ideas. The courses included interesting lectures, discussions, presentations, and practical assignments that helped me improve my communication and teamwork skills. Studying with classmates from different countries also allowed me to see different points of view and better understand other cultures.
Living in Slovenia and Building Global Friendships
Living in Slovenia was just as rewarding as studying there. It is a beautiful country with amazing nature, peaceful cities, and a rich culture. I enjoyed discovering places such as Ljubljana, Lake Bled, and the Slovenian coast, as well as natural landmarks like the Savica Waterfall in Ukanc and Izola. I particularly appreciated how safe, clean, and organized everything was, which made me feel comfortable throughout my stay. In my free time, I had the opportunity to travel to nearby countries—Austria, Budapest, Tarvisio, Venice, and Paris—visit historical places, and learn more about Europe.
One of the best parts of my exchange was meeting people from all over the world. I made friends from many different countries, and I enjoyed learning about their cultures, traditions, and languages. Spending time together, studying, traveling, and sharing everyday experiences—like a farewell dinner using student meal coupons—created friendships that I will always cherish. These connections taught me the importance of being open-minded, respectful, and curious about other cultures.
Overcoming Challenges and Personal Growth
Of course, living abroad also came with some challenges. Being away from my family and adapting to a new country was not always easy. There were moments when I missed home and had to learn how to solve problems on my own. However, these challenges helped me become more independent, confident, and adaptable. They showed me that stepping outside my comfort zone is one of the best ways to grow as a person.
I am deeply grateful to SASS, the Erasmus+ KA171 program, and everyone who supported me during my mobility. From the first day until the end, I felt welcomed and encouraged. I would highly recommend the Erasmus+ program to any student, as it provides valuable academic knowledge, unforgettable memories, and skills that will benefit you both personally and professionally.
