Student Status for Students with Special Needs

Students with special needs may obtain a special status that enables them to benefit from adjustments to the study process, facilities and access to information, helping them to successfully complete their studies.

Adjustments to the Study Process

Students with special needs and students with special status are entitled to adjustments in the implementation of study programmes and to additional professional support during their studies. They are allowed to progress through their studies and complete them over a longer period of time than prescribed by the study programme, while retaining all student rights and benefits, in accordance with Article 69(1) of the Higher Education Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 32/12 – consolidated version, with amendments).

Students who are granted a recognised special status have access to various adjustments that facilitate their studies:

  • During lectures and exercises: Adjustments to classroom space, access to didactic tools, and tutor support.
  • Assessment and examinations: Adaptation of exam conditions (e.g., extended time, alternative formats).
  • Access to information: Adaptation of study materials and literature into accessible formats.
  • Library services: Specific adjustments enabling access to library materials and facilities.
  • Website and Moodle accessibility: The website and Moodle include accessibility plugins that support the needs of blind and visually impaired students (plugins accessible via the “Accessibility” label in the upper right corner of the website and in the “Accessibility” box on the right side of the Moodle dashboard).

The faculty, in cooperation with the coordinator for students with special needs, also provides adjustments tailored to specific types of disabilities:

  • Blind and visually impaired students: Adapted literature and materials, use of specialised software, assistance with orientation, tactile and high-contrast signage.
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing students: Adapted audiovisual content, use of visual alerts, access to a speech-to-text interpreter or sign language interpreter.
  • Students with mobility impairments: Accessible facilities, adapted furniture, assistance with movement.
  • Students with learning difficulties: Individual academic support, adapted assessment methods, use of assistive learning tools.
  • Students with long-term illnesses, autism spectrum conditions, or psychosocial difficulties: Individual agreements regarding study adjustments and support in managing challenges.

In accordance with the “Rules on Students with Special Needs and Special Status” (available on Regulations page), the status of a student with special needs may be granted to:

  • Blind and visually impaired students (visual function impairment)
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Students with speech and language disorders
  • Students with specific learning difficulties
  • Students with mobility impairments
  • Students with long-term illnesses
  • Students on the autism spectrum
  • Students with psychosocial difficulties

The decision on granting the status is issued by the Student and Academic Affairs Commission.

In the Web Office, under the section Applications and Requests – Submit Request, select from the list Application for obtaining the status of a student with special needs/student with special status and choose the appropriate type of request.

Attach the relevant supporting documents confirming eligibility for the status. The documents must be valid for the academic year for which the status is being granted:

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Proof of participation in international competitions or a confirmed application for a competition
  • Proof of artistic achievements or cultural worker status (awards, recognitions, certificate issued by the Ministry of Culture)
  • Relevant proof of athlete or coach status issued by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia, a national sports federation, the Sports Federation for the Disabled of Slovenia – Paralympic Committee, or another competent sports authority (in Slovenia or abroad)
  • Medical certificate issued by a specialist

Note: The Student and Academic Affairs Commission usually meets once a month (every third Monday of the month).

Trust is the foundation, support is the pathway.

At the School of Advanced Social Studies, I lead the Career Centre, where I support students in career planning, skills development, and their first steps into the labour market. I provide guidance, connect students with opportunities, and create platforms for collaboration with employers. I also organise events, workshops, and practical training sessions. My role is to build a bridge between students, alumni, and the professional environment and to help them confidently shape their career paths.
