Erasmus+ BIP Mobility in Brno: Student Story by Tia Špringer

SASS student Tia Špringer shares her inspiring journey from the Erasmus+ BIP Lead Smart programme in Brno.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone: My Erasmus+ Mobility in Brno

Sometimes, it only takes a few days in a new environment to start seeing things from a different perspective. That is exactly what happened during my Erasmus+ mobility at Newton University in Brno, where I participated in the Lead Smart programme from 22 to 26 June. I applied mainly because I found the programme topics interesting, but I returned home with much more than new knowledge – I came back with new friendships, valuable experience, and greater confidence in working within an international environment.

The Lead Smart programme focused on three key areas of modern leadership: Lead Yourself – Emotional Intelligence & Self-Management, Lead Well – Advanced Problem Solving, and Lead Confidently – Decision Making Under Pressure. From the moment I discovered the programme, I knew I wanted to be part of it because I have always been interested in personal development, effective communication, and teamwork, both from a personal and an academic perspective.

Students from several European countries participated in the mobility, with the largest group coming from Romania, alongside participants from Poland, Slovakia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. On the first day, we were divided into international teams and worked together throughout the entire week. In addition to attending lectures, we prepared a group presentation, and our team focused on the topic of Emotional Intelligence.

From Emotional Intelligence to Global Collaboration

As a Psychosocial Assistance student at the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS), emotional intelligence is a subject that is particularly close to me. Although I was already familiar with many of the concepts through my university studies, it was a unique experience to discuss professional topics entirely in English. This experience inspired me even more and made me seriously consider pursuing my master’s degree in English in the future.

One of the most valuable aspects of the mobility was the opportunity to collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds. I usually prefer working independently, so being part of an international team was also a personal challenge. However, I quickly realised how much we can learn from people who think differently and come from different cultures. Experiences like these help develop openness, adaptability, and teamwork – skills that are essential not only during our studies but also in our future professional careers.

Beyond Lectures: Friendships, Fun, and Personal Growth

Of course, the mobility was not only about learning. The organisers also planned several social activities, and one of my favourite memories was the evening Party Tram through the streets of Brno. Those relaxed moments gave us the opportunity to get to know each other better, build meaningful friendships, and create memories that will stay with us long after the programme ended.

Looking back, I realise that this mobility was much more than just five days of lectures. It improved my confidence in communicating in English, broadened my perspective on leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving, and, most importantly, helped me become more confident in an international environment. My Erasmus+ mobility in Brno has been one of the most valuable academic experiences I have had so far. I would gladly participate in a similar programme again because I truly believe that opportunities like this contribute not only to our academic and professional development but also to our personal growth.

If I had to summarise my experience in one sentence, it would be this: “Just do it. Take the opportunity.” Sometimes, the simple decision to try something new can become one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
