Social Management (BA)

Enrolment conditions

Enrolment into the 1st Year

You may enrol in the 1st year of the undergraduate university study programme Social Management if you have completed:

A) the general matura exam, or
B) the vocational matura exam in a relevant secondary technical programme and an additional matura subject. The additional subject must not be the same subject already taken in the vocational matura, or
C) any four-year secondary school programme completed before 1 June 1995.

Applicants who have completed equivalent education abroad also meet the admission requirements.

For option B), a relevant secondary programme is one classified under Klasius-P-16 field 03 (Social sciences, business and law).

Accepted additional matura subjects for option B) include:
English, Economics, Philosophy, French, Geography, Greek, Italian, Italian as a second language, Latin, Hungarian as a second language (bilingual education), German, Psychology, Computer Science, Russian, Slovene as a second language (bilingual education), Slovene as a second language (Italian-language secondary schools), Sociology, Spanish, History.

If the number of applicants exceeds the available places, a selection procedure will take place.

For candidates under A and C:

40% final grades of the 3rd and 4th year
60% final result of the (general or vocational) matura exam

For candidates under B:

40% result of the vocational matura
40% final grades of the 3rd and 4th year
20% grade in the additional matura subject

Differential exams at the undergraduate level in Social Management are FREE OF CHARGE.

Enrolment into the 2nd Year (Transfer Criteria)

You may enrol directly in the 2nd year if you have:

Graduated from a higher vocational education programme (after 1 January 1994) and meet the basic admission criteria for a university study programme.
No differential exams are required for graduates in the fields of: social sciences, business, administration, law.
Graduates from other fields must complete 12 ECTS of differential exams from: Dynamics of Contemporary Society and Social Science Methodology.

Applicants transferring from other first-cycle Bologna study programmes based on recognized exams may also enrol.

Enrolment into the 3rd Year (Transfer Criteria)

You may directly enrol in the 3rd year if you have:

Completed a higher vocational education programme before 1 January 1994,* or
Completed a university or higher professional study programme before 11 June 2004,* or
Completed a first-cycle (Bologna) higher professional or university programme,*
or are transferring based on recognized exams from another first-cycle Bologna programme.

*Graduates from the fields of social sciences, business, administration and law are exempt from differential exams.
All others must complete 24 ECTS of differential exams from the following courses:

Dynamics of Contemporary Society
Social Science Methodology
Business Economics
Qualitative Methodology

Applicants who have completed equivalent education abroad also meet the admission requirements.

Tuition Fee

The Faculty has obtained state funding (concession) for the Social Management study programme, which means that study within the available enrolment places is tuition-free.

If you no longer meet the conditions for full-time study (for example, you have already used the option of two full-time enrolments, or you have changed your study programme), you must enrol as a part-time student.

Payment options allow for a single payment or installment payment (up to 5 installments) with the following due dates: upon enrolment, and no later than 30 November, 31 January, 31 March, and 31 May of the current academic year. For installment payments, an administrative fee of 30.00 EUR is charged for each installment.

Course Structure and Schedule

The programme is offered as both full-time and part-time study. The organisation of the part-time programme is specifically adapted to the needs of students who are employed or have other obligations. For the delivery of contact hours, the faculty also uses various modern information and communication technologies (such as the online classroom).

The study programme is conducted at two locations:

in Nova Gorica, at the faculty headquarters (Gregorčičeva ulica 19)
in Ljubljana, at the branch unit (Leskoškova 9e)

In Nova Gorica, lectures and seminars generally take place in the morning between 9:00 and 13:00, and in the afternoon between 16:00 and 20:00. With various adjustments, the teaching process is organised in a way that enables participation also for students who are employed.

In Ljubljana, lectures and seminars are usually held two to three times per week in the afternoon, between 16:00 and 20:00. The remaining contact hours are delivered remotely through ICT tools.

If required by the scope of the teaching process, lectures or seminars may exceptionally be scheduled on Saturdays. For students who cannot attend certain scheduled sessions, the faculty offers the Study+ Support package, which provides additional flexibility in following the study programme.

* In exceptional circumstances (public health measures, illness, etc.), we reserve the right to make minor adjustments.
** If the number of newly enrolled students at the part-time study location is below the threshold specified in the call for enrolment, the faculty may decide to conduct the programme in the form of consultations only or not to deliver the programme at that location.

Study for International Students

International students are offered the possibility to study in English.

International students attend lectures and seminars in English in those courses where an English-language delivery is provided alongside the Slovenian version.
For other courses, individual or group consultations in English are organised, provided that at least one international student is enrolled in the course. In some courses, attendance at additional lecture or seminar sessions may be required; students are informed of this in advance via the timetable.

At the beginning of the academic year, students complete a survey regarding their interest in English-language consultations. If they select this option, regular attendance is expected.

Students who use the Study+ Support package have access to recordings of consultations, provided that at least one student attended the session.

Curriculum

The undergraduate study programme Social Management (BA) is structured so that each semester consists of 30 ECTS credits, and each academic year comprises 60 ECTS credits. The programme lasts three years, and students must complete a total of 180 ECTS credits.

In the current academic year, the faculty offers a selection of elective courses from the full catalogue. The list of elective courses offered in the current academic year is available at urniki@fuds.si.

Students may also complete elective courses within other comparable study programmes at SASS or at other higher education institutions. The procedure is defined in the “Rules on Verification and Assessment of Student Knowledge” available on the Regulations page.

The new curriculum includes the changes to the study programme adopted at the Senate meeting on 14 November 2019. The new curriculum applies to all students. The previous curriculum is no longer implemented!

Assessment of Knowledge

The assessment system is designed to encourage continuous work, active learning, and steady student progress. Various forms of assessment are used, including mid-term tests, written and oral exams, seminar papers, projects, portfolios, and reports on practical training.

The methods of assessment are defined in the course syllabi, which are published on the website.

Students may apply for recognition of previously completed exams or other obligations if they are comparable in content to the requirements of the programme. More information on the Recognition of exams.

Progression Through Study Years

To progress to the next study year, a student must complete at least 45 ECTS from the previous year when advancing from the first to the second year. To progress from the second to the third year, the student must have completed all obligations from the first year and at least 45 ECTS from the second year. If differential exams are prescribed, they must be completed before progression.
In exceptional cases—such as illness, parenthood, or officially granted special status—a conditional enrolment into the next study year is possible. The decision is made by the Dean, based on the proposal of the Student and Academic Affairs Commission.

Termination of student status: Student status is terminated in the cases defined by the Higher Education Act and the Statute of SASS.

Additional Year (“Absolventski Staž”): After completing the final semester, a student who has not yet graduated may exercise the right to an additional year (“absolventski staž”). This is possible only immediately after the completion of the final semester, and only if the student has not repeated a year or changed the study programme or study track. If the student has repeated a year or changed the programme, their student status ends immediately after the completion of the final semester.

Requirements for Completing the Study Programme

To complete the study programme, the student must fulfil all academic obligations prescribed by the curriculum, amounting to 180 ECTS credits.

A student who enrols in the second year of the Social Management (BA) programme after completing a university study programme adopted after 1 January 1994 must complete all prescribed differential exams and the regular study obligations of the second and third year, totalling at least 120 ECTS.

A student who enrols in the third year after completing a higher professional study programme adopted before 1 January 1994 must complete all prescribed differential exams and the regular study obligations of the third year, amounting to at least 60 ECTS.

Acquired Competences

Within the Social Management (BA) study programme, students acquire the following general competences and subject-specific competences.

General Competences

The knowledge and understanding of social processes and the ability to perform analysis, synthesis and prediction of solutions and their consequences in relation to these processes
Master research methods, procedures and processes in the field of social sciences
The development of critical and self-critical assessment
The ability of a flexible application of knowledge in practice
Understanding the importance of quality, and striving for quality professional work through autonomy, (self-) criticism, (self-) reflection and (self-) evaluation in the professional work
Sensitivity to the human and social environment, and development of communication abilities and skills, especially communication in an international environment
Ethical reflection and commitment to professional ethics in the social environment with respect to the principle of non-discrimination and multiculturalism
The ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations to work in a group and with other users and groups (local communities, public administration organizations, industry, non-governmental organizations), and the ability of tolerant dialogue
The ability to identify and exploit the opportunities offered in the working and social environment (which are expressed as the entrepreneurial spirit and active citizenship).

Subject-Specific Competences

The knowledge and understanding of the justification and history of the development of core social science disciplines (profession), namely, in the fields of sociology, political science, communication science, economics and management, social informatics, jurisprudence, social statistics, and qualitative methods
The ability to solve specific social and occupational problems by using social science scientific methods and procedures
The ability to connect coherent mastery of fundamental knowledge acquired at compulsory courses and their application in practice
The ability of acquisition, selection, evaluation, and placement of new information, and the ability of interpretation in the context of social sciences
The ability of interdisciplinary approach, which is reflected as an understanding of a general structure of social sciences and the connection between its various disciplines and sub-disciplines
The understanding and application of the method of critical analysis and development of theories, as well as their application in solving specific social and work problems
The development of abilities and skills in the application of knowledge in the field of social sciences by means of solving theoretical and empirical problems
The ability to use information-communication technologies and systems in the field of social sciences
Organizational and management skills in organizations, upon understanding individual values and collective value systems, and management of professional ethical issues
Organizational and management skills for the organization of active and independent work
Communicating with experts from various fields of economic and social life as well as with various interest groups
Understanding the relationships between individuals, organizations, and social environment, the ability of complex system observation and action;
The knowledge and understanding of the theoretical background of analytical and counselling work (the transfer of knowledge to the user)
