Erasmus+ Study Mobility in Budapest: A Life-Changing Journey
Discover the inspiring story of our student who overcame her fears and found true personal courage in Budapest.
How International Mobility Changed My Perspective on the World
When I decided to go on an Erasmus+ study mobility in Budapest at our partner institution, Kodolányi János University of Applied Sciences, I expected a new academic experience, getting to know a different culture, and living in a foreign city. However, I did not expect this experience to have such a powerful personal impact on me and to forever change my perspective on the world, people, and myself.
Budapest charmed me from the moment I arrived. It was the first truly large city I had ever lived in, and its sheer size was what fascinated me the most. The endless streets, the vibrant city pulse, the majestic buildings, and the rich history made me feel as if I had stepped into a completely new world. I was particularly captivated by the architecture. Every stroll through the city felt like a walk through history, where different eras, art, and culture intertwine. The city is full of hidden corners, breathtaking views, and stories waiting to be rediscovered over and over again.
Facing Fears and Overcoming Homesickness
Even though I believed before leaving that homesickness wouldn’t affect me much, I was very wrong. My first days at the university were something I will remember forever, especially whenever I think that something is impossible to achieve. Monday, February 2, 2026, was one of the hardest days of my life. The feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and fear were so intense that I had never experienced anything like them before. I had always considered myself an independent person who manages well in new situations, which made this experience all the more surprising.
The first two weeks were exceptionally challenging. I missed home, my family, my friends, and above all, the feeling of belonging. For the first time, I truly understood how important language is—how vital it is that someone understands you, so you can effortlessly express your thoughts, feelings, and worries. Even though I was in touch with my loved ones every day via video calls, it could not replace genuine human contact. I was in a city of millions, yet I felt completely alone.
Then, something happened that I will never forget. The third week arrived, and it felt as if the world had turned upside down —as if I had stepped into a different reality. Suddenly, the fear, uncertainty, and loneliness began to fade away. They were replaced by joy, curiosity, and a sense of freedom. I finally started experiencing everything I had imagined before my departure. I began exploring Budapest and its secrets, discovering the beauties of Hungary, and meeting people from all over the world.
People were truly one of the most beautiful parts of my exchange. I met students of various nationalities, cultures, and life stories. With many of them, I formed sincere friendships that will remain a part of my life long after the mobility ends. Through conversations and shared experiences, I learned about different worldviews and realized how much we can learn from one another.
Studies That Inspire and Open New Horizons
The study experience also exceeded my expectations. I was particularly inspired by the Intercultural Communication course, led by Professor Dr. Richter Borka. Her lectures were not just a transfer of knowledge, but a space for reflection, discussion, and personal growth. Her teaching style inspired me and showed me how important understanding, respect, and openness are in an intercultural environment. She truly opened my eyes and left a profound mark on me.
In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed other courses where I gained valuable knowledge in the fields of marketing, tourism, and international cooperation. After a long time, I felt a genuine joy for attending lectures and learning once again.
Looking back today, I realize that Erasmus was not just a study exchange. It was a life-changing turning point. It taught me perseverance, independence, and self-confidence. It showed me that I can overcome even those moments when everything seems too difficult. Above all, it opened my eyes. I realized that the world is not actually as big as it sometimes seems. The boundaries we often see in front of us are mostly just in our minds. The world is accessible, full of opportunities, and full of people waiting for us to meet them.
I would recommend the Erasmus+ mobility experience to any student without hesitation. I would gladly do it all over again, and I sincerely hope to get another opportunity for a similar international experience in the future. Budapest will forever remain in my memory as the city where I found courage, overcame my fears, and realized that I can achieve much more than I ever believed. Thank you, Budapest!
