Erasmus Exchange in Portugal: The Best Semester of My Studies

When I decided to go on an Erasmus exchange, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. I set off on this journey together with a classmate; we only knew that we wanted to experience something new, step out of our comfort zone, and live in a different environment for a while. Deciding to participate in the Erasmus+ study exchange at the partner university Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) in Portugal was one of the best decisions of my life. Although I expected a lot, I could not have imagined how profoundly this period would impact my personal growth, confidence, and worldview.

The first few days in a new environment were filled with mixed feelings. Excitement about the new city, faculty, and people was intertwined with uncertainty, as it was my first time being abroad on my own for an extended period. Every beginning is challenging—especially when you find yourself in an unfamiliar environment where you have to adapt to a different way of life. In those moments, having a classmate by my side was invaluable, as we faced initial challenges, managed daily responsibilities, and solved unexpected situations together. Despite these initial hurdles, we quickly got into the rhythm of student life and began enjoying all the opportunities that international mobility had to offer.

International Experience and Personal Growth

One of the best parts of the exchange was meeting people from all over the world. Through lectures, group projects, and social gatherings, I had the opportunity to connect with students from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life stories. It was fascinating to observe how differently we think, yet how remarkably fast we find common interests and forge genuine connections. It was precisely this international environment that helped me become more open, communicative, and willing to step outside my usual boundaries.

Even though we embarked on this experience as a pair, the mobility still had a key impact on my personal growth. I learned to be more independent, organized, and adaptable. Everyday tasks that I took for granted at home became opportunities to learn and build self-confidence in a foreign country. With every obstacle overcome, I believed in myself and my abilities even more. I realized that I can successfully solve challenges and adapt even when things don’t go according to plan.

Practical Knowledge and Exploring a New Culture

An important part of the exchange was, of course, the academic side. At the host university, I experienced different approaches to teaching. The professors encouraged creative thinking, visual expression, and practical work in graphic design, which expanded my horizons and deepened my understanding of the field. The practical knowledge I gained will undoubtedly serve as an important asset in my ongoing personal and professional development.

Travel gave a special charm to my Erasmus experience. I used my free time to explore Portugal and visit places I probably would never have seen otherwise. Every trip offered a new lesson, a fresh perspective on life, and an opportunity to discover the local culture, history, and customs. I visited numerous cities, explored the coastline, smaller towns, and natural landmarks that amazed me with their beauty and diversity. This allowed me to experience Portugal in a much more authentic way than a typical tourist would. Organizing transportation, planning trips, and discovering unknown places were part of daily adventures that gave me a sense of freedom and independence. Every new place brought its own story, new people, and unforgettable memories. It is because of these experiences that I now appreciate the world’s diversity and the richness of different cultures even more.

Looking back today, I realize that Erasmus was not just an academic exchange, but an invaluable life school that taught me openness, independence, and self-belief. It showed me that we can achieve so much when we dare to leave the safety of home. Beyond new knowledge, it gave me precious friendships, countless unforgettable memories, and experiences that will remain a part of me for a long time.

I would advise any student who is still hesitating or afraid to take the first step to seize this opportunity. Erasmus is not merely a study exchange; it is a life-changing experience that enriches you personally and professionally, broadens your horizons, and proves that you are capable of far more than you ever thought.
