Erasmus+ Exchange in Portugal: Exploring the Startup Ecosystem at the University of Algarve
Follow the 3-month research journey of our doctoral student at the University of Algarve, focusing on startup growth.
International Academic Experience: Analyzing Startup Ecosystems
This study research was conducted at the University of Algarve during the period from 20 November 2025 to 20 February 2026 under the academic supervision of Prof. Hugo Pinto. The research formed an integral part of my doctoral studies in strategic communication and entrepreneurship and focused on the analysis of the Portuguese startup ecosystem, with particular emphasis on legislative frameworks, institutional support mechanisms, entrepreneurship education, and place branding.
The main objective of the study research was to examine the structure, dynamics, and development of the startup ecosystem in Portugal, with a specific focus on how legal, institutional, and branding-related factors influence startup creation and growth. A dedicated part of the research focused on the analysis of the legislative and institutional framework for startups in Portugal. This included an examination of startup-related regulations, support measures, and administrative procedures, with the aim of understanding how legal clarity, institutional credibility, and public support mechanisms contribute to the attractiveness and sustainability of the startup ecosystem.
Academic Contribution and Lectures
In parallel with the research activities, the author actively contributed to the academic and educational mission of the University of Algarve. During the research stay, a lecture entitled “Role and Impact of Startups: Case Study Estonia and Lithuania” was delivered to students, focusing on the economic, institutional, and innovation-related role of startups, as well as comparative insights drawn from the startup ecosystems of Estonia and Lithuania. The lecture connected theoretical concepts with empirical case studies, highlighting how national policies, ecosystem maturity, and place branding contribute to startup success.
Academic Outcome and Dissertation Impact
Academic outcome of my study research was the preparation of a scientific paper entitled “Place Branding and Startup Development: Case Study of the Algarve Region.” This paper examines how place branding strategies at the regional level influence startup development, attractiveness for entrepreneurs, and ecosystem visibility. The focus on the Algarve region provides a context-sensitive analysis that complements national-level studies and contributes to broader academic debates on place branding, regional innovation systems, and entrepreneurial ecosystems.
Overall, the study research at the University of Algarve provided a strong empirical and theoretical foundation for the author’s doctoral dissertation and future scientific publications. The combination of ecosystem analysis, legislative assessment, teaching activities, and academic writing contributed to a comprehensive research experience. The supervision of Prof. Hugo Pinto ensured methodological rigor, critical reflection, and strong integration with contemporary research on innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional development. The research stay also strengthened international academic cooperation and reinforced the comparative perspective essential for understanding startup ecosystems in a European context.
