Project Focus

The POPEDEM project (Jean Monnet Chair) promotes EU studies and addresses populism in Europe, its roots, and its consequences for the future of European democracy. The project identifies flaws within the European governance system that populist movements exploit. By employing an innovative combination of open teaching, public debates, and research, it formulates policy recommendations aimed at strengthening the EU as a democratic supranational political entity.

Short project description

The Jean Monnet Chair on Populism and the Future of European Democracy (POPEDEM) promotes EU studies through an innovative combination of open teaching, virtual classrooms, co-creative public debates, research, and policy recommendations. It is grounded in current academic discourses within political science, sociology, communication studies, and other relevant disciplines regarding populism, its roots, character, and consequences for the future development of the European Union as a unique form of a democratic supranational political entity. The project is based on the recognition of the challenges and flaws within the European governance system, as well as the complex relationships between EU institutions and member states—dynamics that various populist movements frequently exploit to further their own agendas.
