Social Manager plans, leads, coordinates and supervises activities in the field of social security. It is oriented towards raising the level of quality of life and human dignity. Social Manager successfully faces the challenges of social development, social policy, social exclusion, social justice, as well as broader social (economic, environmental and other current) problems. He/she works in the fields of social protection, education, health, human rights, workers’ rights, economic development, ecology and related fields.
BA study programme Social Management enables the acquisition of knowledge for successful coping with practical professional and work challenges, develops the ability to communicate in the profession and between professions, professional criticism and responsibility, initiative and independence in decision-making and leadership.
Upon successful completion of the study, the graduate obtains an education that, while fulfilling other legal conditions, enables him/her to pass the professional exam for working in the field of social protection.
Enrolment into the 1st year
On the basis of Article 38 of the Higher Education Act, the following individuals can be enrolled in the first year of the Social Management study programme (BA):
- A) Anyone who has completed matura examination,
- B) Anyone who has completed the vocational matura examination or final exam in the corresponding programme for obtaining secondary professional education,
- C) Anyone who has graduated from any 4-years secondary school programme before 01.06.1995.
Enrolment requirements are also fulfilled by those who have completed equivalent education abroad.
Selection criteria in case of limited enrolment:
SASS can limit the enrolment, if the number of applications significantly exceeds the number of available vacancies. In the case of limited enrolment, the candidates from paragraphs A, B and C are selected according to the following criteria:
- Overall success at the final exam, vocational matura examination or general matura examination – 60% points,
- Overall score in the third and fourth year of school – 40% points.
Differential exams are additionally payable. The price of a single differential exam is 150 EUR, and should be paid before the registration for the exam.
Enrolment into the 2nd year according to the criteria for transitions
Progress directly into the second year of the study programme of Social Management (BA) is possible for:
- Graduates who have successfully completed a post-secondary professional programme (višješolski strokovni), adopted after the 01.01.1994, if they meet the conditions for the enrolment into a Higher professional/BA study programme.
Graduates must pass the differential exams from the set of elective courses of the first and second year prescribed by the competent body at SASS in the range of maximum 24 credits (ECTS) on the basis of recognized differences between the two programmes.
- Candidates who (due to transition) enrol on the basis of recognized exams previously passed in other (Bologna) study programmes of the same level.
Enrolment into the 3rd year according to the criteria for transitions
Progress directly into the third year of the study programme Social Management (BA) is possible for:
- a) Graduates who have successfully completed post-secondary (višješolski) education programmes adopted before 01.01.1994, if they meet the conditions for the enrolment into a Higher professional/BA study programme.
- b) Graduates who have successfully completed high professional (visoka strokovna) or university – BSc (univerzitetni) education programmes on first level adopted before 11.6. 2004 if they meet the conditions for the enrolment into Higher professional/BA study programme.
- c) Graduates of (Bologna) higher professional and university education programmes on first level, if they meet the conditions for the enrolment into Higher professional/BA study programme.
Candidates from points a), b) and c) must pass differential exams from the set of elective courses of the first and second year prescribed by the competent body at SASS in the range of maximum 45 credits (ECTS) on the basis of recognized differences between the two programmes.
- d) Candidates who (due to transition) enrol on the basis of recognized exams previously passed in other (Bologna) study programmes of the same level.

Price: EUR 1.990,00 per year.
Terms of payment: Tuition fee can be paid as a single payment or in instalments (from 1 to 5 instalments) with the following due dates: at the time of enrolment; at the latest on 30.11.; o the latest on 31.1.; at the latest on 31.3.; at the latest on 31.5. of the current academic year.
Differential exams are additionally payable. The price of a single differential exam is 130 EUR, and should be paid before the registration for the exam.
MODE OF STUDY
Bachelor of Arts (BA)/Higher professional study programme Social Management is implemented as part-time study.
In part-time study, the organization and timing of lectures, seminars and exercises are adjusted accordingly. For the implementation of contact hours, the faculty also applies a variety of modern forms of information and communication technology (online classroom, etc.).
A study year is generally implemented in one academic year, and it is divided into two semesters. During the semesters, students attend lectures, seminars and other forms of organized activities. Exams are generally implemented during (three) examination periods – the winter, summer and autumn examination period.
The schedule of lectures: The lectures and seminars are organized in the afternoon hours during weekdays and, exceptionally, on Saturdays. The studies take place at the headquarters of the faculty in Nova Gorica (Gregorčičeva 19), and at the dislocated unit in Ljubljana (Leskoškova 9/e). The access to the schedule and materials is available via Web office (spletni referat) or online classroom (Moodle) after the candidate is registered.

KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT AND GRADING
Knowledge assessment is part of the study process of teaching and learning, and it takes place during the course of the study process (after the first semester) and after the completion of the individual courses of the study programme (after the second semester). At the same time, students are expected to pass ongoing activities. The intention and objective of knowledge assessment is to acquire regular and quality information about how students are achieving the planned general and course-specific competences, and obtain information on the achievement of the goals of the study programme.
The method of knowledge assessment and grading is determined for each individual course and specified in its syllabus. They are adjusted to verify the achieved objectives at individual courses, anticipated achievements of the study, and development of general and subject-specific competencies. Methods of knowledge assessment and grading vary because of different teaching methods, which ensure criteria of validity, reliability and objectivity, but also take into account the quality of the structure and organization of knowledge.
The purpose of knowledge assessment is to:
- Assess knowledge and skills of students,
- Assess output produced in the course of the study work,
- Offer quality feedback on the progress and achieved results, aiming to motivate students to acquire additional knowledge and skills,
- Enable integration into continuing education, and
- Obtain data for the evaluation of conducted pedagogical work.
Criteria for knowledge assessment is based on the objectives of the study programme and anticipated achievements of students, identified in individual syllabuses. Students are informed about elements of knowledge assessment and grading criteria in written form, as part of curriculum, and at the start of each course (at the beginning of each semester). Moreover, higher education lecturer informs students on the syllabus of the course, study obligations, shares of individual components of knowledge assessment that contribute to the final grade at the course, and relevant literature.
Anticipated methods of knowledge assessment and grading are:
- Oral exams,
- Written exams,
- Seminar papers or essays,
- Oral presentations,
- Practical assignments or portfolio, journals,
- Solving real problems (case studies),
- Projects, peer reviews,
- Written report on professional practice,
- Diploma thesis.
Recognition of study obligations
Student who has previously studied in another study programme of the same or higher level at a higher education institution in the Republic of Slovenia or abroad may, prior to the start of studies or during studies, apply for the recognition of exams which are equivalent (in content and scope) to those exams that he/she already passed. SASS many also recognize the knowledge that corresponds to the learning contents of the courses in the enrolled study programme, and has been acquired in different forms of education. Recognition of knowledge and skills acquired prior to the enrolment is decided by the course holder upon a written request of the student (completed form), attached certificates or other documents proving the successfully acquired knowledge as well as the content and scope of this knowledge and the student’s input. The exam may be recognized in full, in part or is not recognized. The commission for Study and Student affairs decides on the recognition of elective courses that are not implemented at the faculty.
Students also have the opportunity to apply for recognition of professional practice.
ADVANCING THROUGH THE PROGRAMME
To progress from the first to the second year, the student must acquire at least 45 ECTS from the first year.
To progress from the second into the third year, the student must meet all the requirements from the first year and acquire at least 45 ECTS from the second year.
The student cannot progress to the next year if he/she did not pass the differential exams.
Exceptionally, students can enrol in the next year, even if all the requirements set by the study programme for enrolment in the next year were not met, if he/she has justifiable reasons, such as maternity, paternity, prolonged illness, exceptional family and social circumstances, participation at top professional, cultural and sports events, or when the status is granted in accordance with the valid statute. The Dean decides on the enrolment from the previous paragraph on the basis of the proposal of the Committee for Study and Student Affairs.
The status of the student ceases if the student:
- Graduates /completes the studies,
- Is excluded,
- Does not enrol into the following year or semester during the studies,
- Does not graduate at the study programme of the first level within 12 months after the end of the last semester; unless the student repeated the year during the study or changed the study programme or module- then his/her status is ceased at the end of the last semester.
Seniority (absolventski staž), or an additional year, is a term that applies to the time after the end of the last semester, when the student may retain his/her status, if he/she did not graduate. The student asserts this right by enrolling into additional year or the Seniority. The student may use this right only immediately after finishing the last semester, provided that:
- He/she does not graduate at the study programme of the first level within 12 months after the end of the last semester (unless the student repeated the year during the study or changed the study programme or module – then his/her status is ceased at the end of the last semester).
Student who achieves the required number of credit points (ETCS) necessary to progress to the next year in the period shorter than one academic year, is enabled to make faster progress. The related decision is adopted by the Committee for Study and Student Affairs upon candidate’s request. The decision determines the mode of faster progress. Faster progress allows students to register and pass the courses for the higher years. The courses can be also passed within another organized education. Based upon the request of the candidate, the Committee for Study and Student Affairs may also decide on early completion of the studies.
Students of the Bachelor of Arts (BA)/Higher professional study programme Social Management obtain the following general competences and course-specific competences.
- The knowledge and understanding of cultural and social processes and the ability to perform their complex analyses;
- The use of methodological tools, i.e. implementation, coordination and organization of research, the application of different research methods and techniques;
- The ability to formulate original ideas, concepts and solutions for specific problems;
- The ethical reflection and commitment to professional ethics in the social environment with respect to the principle of non-discrimination and multiculturalism;
- Development of critical and self-critical assessment;
- The ability of flexible application of knowledge in practice;
- Understanding the importance of quality, and striving for quality of professional work through autonomy, (self-) criticism, (self-) reflection, and (self-) evaluation of the professional work;
- The ability to identify and exploit the opportunities offered in the working and social environment (which are expressed as the entrepreneurial spirit and active citizenship);
- Development of communication skills and skills for communicating with various environments;
- The ability of teamwork, i.e. the willingness to cooperate, , taking the opinions of others into account and fulfilling the agreed roles within the team and the group;
- The ability to develop alternative solutions in the process of strategic planning;
- The ability to initiate strategies, and to transform strategies into projects;
- The ability of networking in the area of social activities;
- The ability to prepare and realize a project, which can compete for local, national, EU and other international funds;
- The understanding of economic aspects for operation of non-profit sector;
- The ability to lead, coordinate and plan a business process in non-profit organization;
- The ability of divergent thinking, critical judgment, creativity and overcoming problems;
- The ability of human resources management, together with the basic ability to include hard-to-employ people in the work process; ;
- The ability to regulate relations between employers and employees;
- the ability to plan, coordinate, monitor and evaluate activities in the organization, especially in the field of social activities;
- The ability to solve complex problems of individuals that are arising in the work environment during the course of work and in the recruitment process;
- The ability to integrate various experts and teamwork in an interdisciplinary way, in order to properly evaluate individual issues that arise in practice and to find appropriate solutions mutually; The ability to use relevant national and international legal sources, to apply electronic resources, and the ability to critically analyse relevant literature;

- the knowledge and understanding of the justification and history of development of core social science disciplines (profession), namely, in the fields of sociology, political science, communication science, economics and management, social informatics, jurisprudence, social statistics and qualitative methods;
- the ability to solve specific social and occupational problems by applying social science scientific methods and procedures;
- The ability to connect coherent mastery of fundamental knowledge, acquired at compulsory courses and their application in practice;the ability of acquisition, selection, evaluation and placement of new information, and the ability of interpretation in the context of social sciences;
- the ability of interdisciplinary approach, which is reflected as an understanding of a general structure of social sciences and the connection between its various disciplines and sub-disciplines;
- the understanding and application of the method of critical analysis and development of theories, and their application in solving specific social and work problems;
- the development of skills and abilities in the application of knowledge in the field of social sciences by means of solving theoretical and empirical problems;
- the ability to use information-communication technologies and systems in the field of social sciences;
- organizational and leadership skills in organizations; organizational and leadership skills for the organization of active and independent work;

- identifying and raising awareness of value attitudes towards the phenomena of social exclusion, prejudices and stereotypes;

The stated competencies are valid for students enrolled in the 1st year of the study program in the academic year 2020/21. Students enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd year of the study program in the academic year 2020/21, and all students enrolled in the study program up to and including the 2019/20 academic year, are subject to the previous competencies of the study program if students progress regularly. CONDITIONS FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE STUDIES
In order to finish the studies, student has to successfully complete all study obligations prescribed by the study programme in the range of 180 credits (ECTS).
The student who enrols into the second year of the Social Management (BA) programme after graduating from a post-secondary professional (višješolski strokovni) study programme adopted after 01.01.1994, must complete all prescribed differential exams and regular study obligations from the second and third year in the range of minimum 120 ECTS credits.
The student who enrols into the third year after graduating from a post-secondary programme adopted before 01.01.1994, must complete all prescribed differential exams and regular study obligations from the third year in the range of minimum 60 ECTS credits.

The higher professional study programme Social Management (BA) is very practical. It enables the acquisition of applied knowledge and concrete experience, and represents an excellent foundation for involvement in work processes in organizations in the public, non-governmental or private sector.
