SASS Academy: Media and Journalism in Practice

Programme Content

The training is divided into two main content areas.
The first area focuses on acquiring knowledge and practical skills in digital and information technologies that are essential for work in media and journalism. Within this area, you will cover the following topics:

• Media and Communication
• Photography and Computer Graphics
• Introduction to Media Production

The second area focuses on gaining knowledge and practical skills in communication and public relations. You will also learn about the profession and methods of journalistic work. Within this area, you will cover the following topics:

• Fundamental Methods of Journalistic and Editorial Work
• Public Relations
• Introduction to the Web and Social Media
• Media Technologies

The programme includes lectures, practical exercises, and knowledge assessments.

Who can apply?

This non-formal education programme is open to everyone. No prior knowledge is required – what matters most is an interest in the subject area and the motivation to gain knowledge and practical skills.

Programme Schedule

October 2025 – June 2026; the programme takes place in both the morning (09:00–13:00) and afternoon (16:00–20:00):

1. Lectures and practical exercises for the first content area take place from 1 October 2025 to 16 January 2026.
2. Lectures and practical exercises for the second content area take place from 9 February 2026 to 5 June 2026.

Knowledge assessments are carried out in the form of written and oral examinations, presentations, and the preparation of written and practical assignments. Some lecturers of non-formal education often assess progress continuously. Certain assessments are organised separately, during designated examination periods:

• 19 January 2026 – 6 February 2026
• 8 June 2026 – 10 July 2026
• 17 August 2026 – 11 September 2026

Knowledge assessments require appropriate prior individual work by the participant.

By purchasing the Study+ package, you gain valuable support that goes beyond the assistance of our helpful faculty staff, who are always ready to guide you through your studies. The package provides the following benefits and services: the possibility to attend most lectures and seminars live via ICT tools (Zoom), year-round access to recordings of most lectures and seminars, the possibility to take exams through ICT tools (Zoom or the Moodle online classroom).

The package can be ordered and paid in a single payment at enrolment or at any time during the academic year. You can check the price for the current academic year on our Price List page.

How Do I Apply?

a) Complete the citizen application form.

b) Send the application to the faculty’s address:

Based on the received documentation, the faculty will invite you to enrol. With the enrolment invitation, you will receive a username and password to access the Web Office. In the Web Office you need to complete and sign (using your mouse) the enrolment paper and the agreement, which will be generated automatically. You will receive the tuition fee invoice by e-mail.*

The tuition fee can be paid in a single amount upon enrolment or in 5 installments as follows: upon enrolment; by 30 November at the latest; by 31 January at the latest; by 31 March at the latest; by 31 May of the current academic year at the latest. When paying in installments, each installment includes an increased tuition fee in the amount of an administrative processing cost of EUR 30.00.

Completion of the Programme

An individual who successfully completes the one-year non-formal education receives a certificate of completed non-formal education and a certificate of passed examinations.

Recognition of Non-Formally Acquired Knowledge

Each course carries credit points. If you later enrol* in the study programme Media and Journalism (BAA) or certain other study programmes at the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS), the faculty offers the possibility of full or partial recognition of non-formal knowledge gained within the “Media and Journalism in Practice” programme, provided that all assessments and obligations have been successfully completed. To do so, the candidate must submit a request for the recognition of non-formally acquired knowledge, which is decided upon by the competent bodies of the faculty.

Candidates who successfully complete the non-formal education programme “Media and Journalism in Practice”, and successfully fulfil all assessments and obligations, may enrol* in the Master’s study programmes Media and Journalism (Master’s) and Strategic Communication (Master’s) without having to take differential exams.

To enrol in the respective formal study programme, the candidate must meet the entry requirements stated in the Call for Enrolment. Calls for Enrolment for all SASS study programmes are published on the faculty’s website.

*The one-year non-formal education programme is carried out only if a sufficient number of candidates enrol.
