Project description:

Recently, the DR’s most remote rural communities have experienced drastic emigration rates and a subsequent brain drain; they face an ageing population, retaining their youth, and attracting new citizens. Increasing demographic change is widening the gap between urban and rural areas, so there is an urgent need to address the key challenges facing rural areas in particular. In addition, life is changing dramatically in the age of digitalisation. ICTs enable individuals to access information, communicate and work remotely and are changing the media space where the importance of social networks is rapidly increasing. This means a diversification of information sources and enables citizens to play an active role in public communication. Since 2008, Europe has been confronted with constant crises that have had a significant social, economic and political impact on people’s lives. Popular dissatisfaction is reflected in the reactions on social networks, where a lot of misinformation has emerged.

The DR was by no means exempt from the above trends. In order to contribute to the strengthening of institutional capacities for territorial and macro-regional governance (DTP’s SO4.2), the engagement of the (young) population in public dialogue is of utmost importance (EUSDR PA10 (action 7, target 7.1). Furthermore, media communication skills are an integral part of the civic competences (PA9) required for sustainable democracy. The proposed SMILE Incubator project recognises the urgent need for action and aims to empower youth living in rural areas by providing them with the essential skills, competences and tools. Through targeted campaigns and initiatives, the project seeks to reverse current trends by equipping young people with the necessary resources to succeed in their rural environment. In this way, sustainable development and resilience is promoted in these communities, which need active and innovative political leaders who encourage investment in human capital, motivation and creativity.

The SMILE Incubator will be managed and implemented by a diverse but balanced consortium of 20 partners (LP, 15 PPs, and 4 ASPs) from all 14 countries of the DR, with complementary competences, experience and expertise, creating synergies that will lead to high relevance and quality of results.

Project main aim:

The main objective of the project is to develop a transnational Social Media Leadership Incubator for rural youth that will serve as a mechanism to strengthen leadership skills and empowerment, thus contributing to the development of sustainable democracies in the DR. The main target group is youth from underdeveloped rural communities, but activities will also aimed at academics, NGOs, the public sector and civil society.

Results/Activities:

Building leadership capacity and social media skills will encourage youth participation in active citizenship and ultimately the future leadership of rural communities in the DR. These objectives will be achieved through three SOs (divided into 12 activities and 39 different deliverables) and series of outputs:

  • SO1 is dedicated to assessing the state of youth participation and leadership in the DR. Policy guidelines to strengthen social media and rural youth leadership will be developed through workshops.
  • SO2 aims to build a cooperation network between different actors in the field of youth leadership.
  • Under SO3, the project will focus on developing social media leadership capacity-building tools for rural youth.

🤝 Meet & Greet: SMILE is on!

Getting Ready for the SMILE Incubator

Exciting times ahead! 🎉 On Tuesday, April 8th, we held our meet-and-greet meeting for the SMILE Incubator – a groundbreaking EU-funded project led by Prof. Dr. Simona Kukovič from the Faculty of Advanced Social Studies in Nova Gorica.

This first gathering brought together project partners from across the Danube region – from EU and non-EU countries alike – and kicked off what promises to be an incredible collaborative journey. 🌐💬

The SMILE Incubator is all about uplifting rural youth by building digital and social media skills, encouraging good governance practices, and sparking active citizenship. Through workshops and interactive programs, we aim to empower young people across 14 countries to engage more with their communities and have their voices heard.

Our meeting was not just about handshakes and introductions (though there were plenty of those!) but also about setting the tone for the project: open, inclusive, and action-driven. We rolled up our sleeves and started planning roles, brainstorming ideas, and laying the foundation for what’s coming next.

We’re so excited for what’s ahead and will share our progress every step of the way. Keep an eye out and join us on this journey. Let’s make the Danube region SMILE! 😄🌍
