Research Ethics Committee (REC SASS)

The Research Ethics Committee at the School of Advanced Social Studies in Nova Gorica (REC) is an advisory body that actively promotes and enables ethically responsible research. Its activities apply to higher education teachers, researchers, and students of all study levels and programmes conducted within the School of Advanced Social Studies in Nova Gorica (SASS).

The Importance of Ethics in Social Science Research

Research ethics is of paramount importance in the social sciences, as SASS researchers often address sensitive topics and vulnerable groups. Unlike in the natural sciences, ethical dilemmas in the social sciences are often more subtle and require in-depth assessment, as they directly impact individuals’ lives and the shaping of public policies. Ethical research ensures that the knowledge gained is used for the benefit of society, thereby building public trust in science. This is in line with our commitment to Responsibility, one of the core organizational values of SASS.

Main Goals and Tasks

The primary goal of the REC SASS is to balance different moral perspectives during the evaluation of research proposals. This includes respecting autonomy, protecting interests, and achieving the well-being of the research community, the researchers themselves, and all participants.

The Research Ethics Committee ensures that SASS researchers adhere to:

  • Established methodological standards
  • Applicable legal regulations
  • All internationally recognized moral rules and standards relevant to a specific field of research
