Erasmus+ mobility at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas of the University of Lisbon (ISCSP), Portugal – Taja Korošec

On January 31st, 2025, I left for my Erasmus+ exchange in Portugal, where I studied at ISCSP in Lisbon and lived there during my stay. Although I felt fear before leaving, as it was the first time I left home for a longer period, I knew I needed an experience that would challenge me and help me grow both personally and academically.

The first days were full of excitement but also challenges. Adjusting to a new lifestyle, a different pace, handling paperwork, and navigating public transportation were stressful at first, but I soon realized these small obstacles gave me independence and confidence. I missed home at times, but video calls and the support of new friends helped me adjust.

At ISCSP, I attended courses in social sciences and international relations, which were interactive and practical. Professors encouraged presentations, and group work, helping me improve my English, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in an international environment. It was interesting to see how different topics were discussed from Portuguese and international perspectives.

Living in Lisbon was something special. The city has a beautiful energy, full of colorful streets, fado music, art, and sunny days. With friends we explored Lisbon’s hidden streets, enjoyed sunny days by the Tagus River, visited local markets, and tried pastel de nata, bacalhau, and other Portuguese dishes.

Some of my favorite moments were trips to the Atlantic coast, visiting Sintra’s castles, and trying surfing for the first time. I also loved evenings at Lisbon’s viewpoints, listening to street music during sunsets and having deep conversations.

During the exchange, I met people from all over the world, with whom I became close friends. I also experienced Portuguese culture and met locals who were open, relaxed, and always ready to help.

This exchange taught me that life is much more than the comfort of our comfort zone. I learned independence, better time management, acceptance of different cultures, and respect for diversity. It also motivated me further in my academic goals and gave me ideas for future research within social sciences.

My Erasmus+ exchange in Portugal was an unforgettable experience that I will carry with me forever. I am grateful to FUDŠ and the Erasmus+ programme for giving me the opportunity to embark on this journey, as I gained not only academic knowledge but also experiences that shaped me as a person.

To all students considering an exchange, I highly recommend taking this opportunity. It is not just a trip; it is a chance to discover yourself, learn about the world, and create memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
