Erasmus+ Doctoral mobility at Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland, Etienne Šajn

As a PhD candidate at FUDŠ, I had the opportunity to participate in a five-day ERASMUS+ program from 5 to 9 May 2025 at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland. This was my first time visiting Switzerland, which made the experience even more special—one more country added to my list, and a great university to explore.

The entire process prior to my arrival was smooth and straightforward. The staff at USI were extremely helpful and welcoming. Before arriving, I had the chance to connect with Professor Suggs, who was very supportive and made me feel like part of the team even before we met in person.

On the first day, I met Professor Suggs in front of the main building. We went through all the necessary formalities, and I received a visitor badge, which made me feel like a real member of the USI team. We toured the campus and visited the offices where Professor Suggs and her team work.

Throughout the five days, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the team, engage in conversations, and gain a better understanding of what it’s like to study and work at USI. I attended several lectures with USI students at various levels—from undergraduate to graduate—which enriched my perspective on their academic environment.

USI was especially interesting to me because it is one of the few universities offering a Master’s program in Health Communication. Since my research focuses on communication between dentists and patients, the visit to USI was both highly relevant and inspiring. One of the highlights of my stay was participating in a Master’s Lunch with students, during which Professor Suggs presented the entire Health Communication program. This initiative—inviting students to have lunch with professors and discuss postgraduate opportunities—was an innovative and engaging approach.

In between academic activities, I also had time to work on my own research and writing. I truly appreciated being part of Professor Suggs’ team, even if just for a short time. It was an incredible experience that enriched both my academic and personal journey.

Beyond the university, I took the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Lugano and the surrounding Ticino region. Switzerland, Ticino, Lugano, and USI left a lasting impression on me, and I sincerely hope to return someday—perhaps as a full member of the team. Fingers crossed!
