Institute for Applied Social Studies

Institute performs basic, applicative, experimental and expert projects and assignments form needs from economic sphere, state institutions, local institutions, international institutions, non-governmental organisations and other users but also for other users and academic and other public. Special attention is focused on development of methodological tools needed to deal with strategy of development, theoretical and empirical study of social and intellectual capital, perspectives and limitations in intercultural communication and intercultural contacts and study of public opinion and public discourse including analysis of public opinion, public discussions and media reporting.

Ministry of Culture asked a survey on Media Freedom in Slovenia. The results were published in hard copy volume with the following authors: Makarovič, M.; Rončević, B.; Tomšič, M.; Besednjak, T.; Šinkovec, U. (2008) Slovenski mediji v družbi in slovenska družba v medijih, Fakulteta za uporabne družbene študije v Novi Gorici. With the order from Ministry for Interior in 2007 a survey was conducted on Public Opinion regarding the work of the Police Force.

School of advanced social studies and IRSA Institute have successfully applied for the »Regional Developmental Centres« project. The project examines developmental resources and potentials of different Slovene regions along with the possibilities for strengthening such potentials. Additionally, the School of advanced social studies in cooperation with various foreign and domestic research institutions actively participates in domestic and international research frameworks within the »Seventh framework programme (FP7)«.  

For the purpose of basic research the School of advanced social studies established a research group named Democracy and Development which attained a public concession for research activities. This can be seen as a confirmation of School's high research achievements and further potentials. The research group commenced its activities in 2009.

Focus and theme: The goal is to analyse developmental dynamics of contemporary societies (particularly focusing on Slovene society). Work envelops theoretical discussions and empirical analysis.

Furthermore, The School of advanced social studies manages four »Target research programmes« (CRP), which are already successfully facilitating the needs of several Slovene Ministries. The Target research programmes are:
