Symposium on Economic and Social Implications of Destination Resort Casino Hotels

The Symposium was held in Theatre Hall in Nova Gorica on 24. - 25. September 2007.

In time of intensive public debate on consequences of spreading of gambling offer in Gorica region and in Slovenia the Faculty of Applied Social Studies has organised in cooperation with Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming, University of Nevada Reno (USA); Centre for the Study of Gambling, University of Salford (UK); Faculty of Economics (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) and European Law Faculty, (Nova Gorica, Slovenia) a Symposium on Economic and Social Implications of Destination Resort Casino Hotels.

Many famous speakers presented their papers, among others PhD. William R. Eadington (University of Nevada Reno, USA), Peter Collins (University of Salford, GB), PhD Bernard Spazzapan (University of Udine, Italy) and Jaime Wiebe (Canada). Interesting debate was raised by contributins of PhD Marko Jaklič (University of Ljubljana), PhD. Hugo Zagoršek (University of Ljubljana), PhD. Borut Rončević (FASS), PhD. Matej Makarovič (FASS), MA Boris Nemec (HIT d.d.), MA Dušan Luin (HIT d.d.), Lan Pečjak (FASS), MA Tomica Dumančič (HIT d.d.), Miha Kramli and others.

Symposium was the first academic meeting with topics of gambling and offered lots of opportunities for deepened academic discussions on topics regarding Gorica region and Slovenia. The symposium was held in both Slovenian and English language with a possibility of simultaneous translation.

Papers presented at symposium were available for public in Slovenian and English language. Currently a hard copy of papers is in print. Such publication will be a valuable contribution to academic and political debates regarding casino hotels resorts in Slovenia.
